The simple guide for your new phone
Thinking about upgrading your phone in the Netherlands? Alongside camera, storage and battery, there is one feature that makes life easier from day one - eSIM. It is fast to set up, works great for travel, and lets you manage more than one number on a single device. Here is everything you need to know, in plain English.
What is an eSIM
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card that lives inside your phone. You download your plan to the device instead of inserting a plastic card. Activation is quick and there is nothing to lose or misplace.
How eSIM works
Your provider gives you a QR code or lets you activate in an app. Scan, confirm, and your phone connects within minutes. No post. No store visit. Just follow the on-screen steps and you are online.
Why switch to eSIM
- Quick setup with no tiny trays to open
- Easy number transfer to your new phone
- Two numbers on one device when your model supports Dual SIM
- Great for travel because you can add a local plan without swapping cards
- Less plastic waste over the lifetime of your device
Check your phone
Most recent iPhone and Android models support eSIM. If you bought your phone unlocked or directly from the manufacturer or an approved retailer, you are set. If in doubt, check your device settings or the manufacturerβs support page.
What you need before you start
- A stable wifi connection to download the eSIM profile
- Your activation QR code or access to your provider app
- Your account login details for verification
- For support, note your EID in Settings so you can share it if asked
How to switch in three easy ways
- Scan a QR code
Open Settings, choose Add eSIM or Mobile Plan, scan the code, and confirm. - Use the provider app
Open the app, pick eSIM, and follow the prompts. - Enter details manually
If needed, add the activation code and server address your provider gives you.
Keep your number
Want to bring your current number to your new plan? Start a number transfer during checkout or in your account. Choose a switch date that suits you. Your phone will move over automatically once the port completes.
Travel made easy
Heading across the EU? Plans that include EU roaming let you use your calls, texts and data while you travel, within fair-use limits. Activate your eSIM in the Netherlands first so roaming works correctly, then set Data Roaming to on when you arrive.
Dual SIM tips
If your phone supports two active lines, keep your primary number for calls and add a second line for work, study or travel. Give each line a label in Settings so you always know which one you are using.
Troubleshooting
- No service after activation
Restart the phone and toggle the line off and on in Settings. - Data not working abroad
Check that Data Roaming is on and that the correct line is set for mobile data. - Need help
Keep your EID handy. Support may ask for it to check your eSIM profile.
